PRINCE2 vs PMBOK - A Comparison of Project Management Approaches

PRINCE2 vs PMBOK - A Comparison of Project Management Approaches

  • Update: 07/05/2023

Project management has become an increasingly important discipline, and there are a few well-known approaches and methodologies. Two of the most popular ones are PRINCE2 and PMBOK. In this post, I'll compare and contrast these two approaches to project management.

PRINCE2, or PRojects IN Controlled Environments, is a structured project management method. It is de facto standard for project management in the UK and some other parts of the world. PMBOK, or the Project Management Body of Knowledge, is a set of standards developed by the Project Management Institute. It offers a standardized set of tools, processes and practices for project management that is widely adopted globally.

Here are some of the main pros and cons of the two approaches:

PRINCE2:

  • Pros: Very structured and standardized. Strong focus on business justification and effective controls. Flexible and scalable for different project sizes.
  • Cons: Can be rigid and bureaucratic. Perceived as documentation-heavy. Does not cover the full project lifecycle. Mostly focused on the UK and some related geographies.

PMBOK:

  • Pros: A very broad and comprehensive set of tools and knowledge areas. Adopted as a global standard, so useful for cross-border projects. Covers the end-to-end project lifecycle.
  • Cons: Can be overwhelming in scope. Not as prescriptive as PRINCE2, so may require more adaptation. Does not focus much on the pre-project phase. Perceived as more lightweight in some geographies like the UK.

In summary, PRINCE2 and PMBOK are both highly useful frameworks, but have some distinct pros and cons. The approach you choose will depend on factors like project size, organization, geography and personal preferences. Many project managers and organizations also use a combination of practices from both.

I hope this comparison of PRINCE2 and PMBOK is helpful! Let me know if you have any other questions on project management methodologies.
