Service Management Certifications: Price and Time Comparison

  • Update: 15/04/2023

For IT service management professionals, certifications are a great way to demonstrate your knowledge and skills.

Three of the popular service management certifications are:

  • ITIL Foundation - ITIL is the most widely adopted IT service management framework. The ITIL Foundation certification covers the basics of ITIL and service management. It takes about 5-7 days to study and pass the exam. The exam fee is typically around $400.
  • FitSM Foundation - FitSM is a lightweight IT service management framework. The FitSM Foundation certification covers the fundamentals of service management according to FitSM. It takes about 3-5 days to study and pass the exam. The exam fee is around $350.
  • OpenSM Foundation - OpenSM is an open-source service management framework. The OpenSM Foundation certification validates basic knowledge of service management based on OpenSM. It takes around 2-4 days to study and pass the exam. The exam fee is approximately $250.

In summary, the certifications differ in the time required to study (2-5 hours), the exam fees ($250-$400), and the service management frameworks they are based on (ITIL, FitSM, and OpenSM). The one you choose depends on your knowledge of the frameworks and budget. ITIL Foundation may require more time and cost more but is the most recognized. FitSM and OpenSM may be more affordable but are newer.

Choosing a certification is an important step in a service management career. Evaluate the options based on your needs and experience to pick the right one for you. Let me know if you have any other questions!
